About Dr. Mattei
Gabriel Mattei Gonzalez, MD
A Physician Focused on Diagnosis, Precision, and Function
Gabriel Mattei Gonzalez, MD, is a board-certified Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation physician specializing in Interventional Pain Medicine and the founder of Mattei Health. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, he provides care in English and Spanish.
Dr. Mattei's approach begins with a simple principle: effective treatment starts with understanding the source of a patient's symptoms. Rather than focusing only on where it hurts, he evaluates how the spine, joints, nerves, muscles, and surrounding structures may be contributing to the problem.
This diagnostic-first philosophy guides every stage of care at Mattei Health, from the initial evaluation to the decision of whether an intervention is appropriate.
A Different Perspective on Pain
As a Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation physician, Dr. Mattei approaches pain through the lens of function.
The location of pain does not always identify its source. Symptoms may originate from a spinal disc, facet joint, sacroiliac joint, nerve, muscle, ligament, or another structure. Determining the most likely pain generator requires a careful history, physical examination, review of imaging, and, when appropriate, targeted diagnostic procedures.
For this reason, Dr. Mattei does not view an injection or procedure as the starting point of treatment. An intervention is considered only after the clinical picture has been evaluated and there is a clear rationale for how the procedure may help.
Precision in Interventional Care
When an intervention is appropriate, Dr. Mattei emphasizes precision, thoughtful patient selection, and image-guided technique.
His clinical interests include interventional treatment of spinal and musculoskeletal conditions, including epidural injections, diagnostic medial branch blocks, radiofrequency ablation, sacroiliac joint procedures, peripheral nerve interventions, treatment of vertebral compression fractures, and other minimally invasive spine and musculoskeletal procedures.
Treatment recommendations are individualized according to the diagnosis, overall health, previous treatments, lifestyle, and personal goals of each patient.
More Than a Pain Score
For Dr. Mattei, successful treatment is not defined solely by a number on a pain scale.
The larger goal is to help patients improve function, whether that means walking more comfortably, returning to exercise, sleeping better, working with fewer limitations, or simply participating more fully in everyday life.
At Mattei Health, patients are encouraged to understand their diagnosis, the available treatment options, and the reasoning behind each recommendation. Dr. Mattei believes that informed patients are better equipped to make decisions about their care.
Why Mattei Health Was Founded
Mattei Health was founded to create a more focused and personal approach to interventional spine and musculoskeletal medicine.
Patients are evaluated by the physician who is responsible for developing their treatment strategy, with an emphasis on clear communication, appropriate intervention, and continuity of care.
His philosophy reflects the central mission of Mattei Health:
Find the source. Treat with precision. Restore function.
Philosophy of Care
Diagnosis before intervention.
Dr. Mattei describes what the history and examination suggest, what remains uncertain, and how each option may address the likely source of symptoms before a treatment is recommended.
A Personal Approach to Care
A plan built around the individual.
Appointments focus on the person behind the symptoms: what a patient is trying to do again, what has already been tried, and what kind of care fits daily life. A plan is revisited as circumstances and goals change.
Education & Training
A foundation in rehabilitation and interventional care.
Each stage of Dr. Mattei's medical education and specialty training contributes to a careful, function-focused approach to care.
Dr. Mattei's training in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation provided a comprehensive foundation in the diagnosis and nonsurgical management of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal and nervous systems, with a particular emphasis on restoring mobility and function.
He subsequently pursued advanced fellowship training in Interventional Pain Medicine, developing expertise in image-guided procedures and minimally invasive treatment options for complex spine, joint, musculoskeletal, and nerve-related conditions.
